I am a distance runner, for me the great test is the 1,500 meters . I'm not excited about the 100 meters, but I'm passionate about the 1,500 meters. I have seen some of the great races of this distance on television, I have watched them again and again, and I have them recorded. It is the test that combines speed, power and tactics. There is no other like it. The 5,000 are no longer the same, they are more of a matter of substance. The 1,500 is the race of intelligence, and that is why so many Spaniards have been very good in this test, and also the British, who are very smart guys, as is well known. The 1,500 is intelligence, vision, you also have to be very intuitive and as clever as possible... Fermín Cacho had all these qualities. -- Until I ran the Edinburgh Half Marathon , I had never participated in a popular race, partly because before I was on the political front line, popular races did not have the same pull as they do now. What has happened to running in the last ten years has been impressive, there has been a great quantitative and qualitative change. -- The experience of the Edinburgh Half Marathon was very enriching. There was an atmosphere of tense joy. A lot of people were excited and when you go out everyone concentrates. I was observing the beauty of the city and the reactions of the runners.
Until kilometer 18 I was going reasonably well and I thought about improving the mark a little. I pushed for 300 or 400 meters and realized that I shouldn't have broken my natural rhythm, because then I did the last two kilometers quite badly. I ended up Special Database with an average per kilometer of 5:39, which is more or less what I was aiming for. Bernardino Lombao , José María Aznar's personal trainer, described my time as discreet, and I accept that. Furthermore, I have always tried to be a discreet person... -- It was the first time that I experienced the feeling of being rubber-necked with each other along the 21,097 meters of the route. It's as if in the end you have a relationship with someone, because you pass them, they pass you, suddenly you identify several of them and you realize that the one in the yellow tracksuit passes you, etc. At the end I would have liked to go have a coffee with them… -- I remember a Nordic man with whom I went the whole way and I was thinking who he would be, what he would do in life... I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the good organization and when I entered the finish line it seemed to me that all the effort of a life running had been worth it. -- When I finished the Edinburgh Half Marathon I felt good and I thought I had to do a marathon , even if it was only one in my life.
My competitive side came out, but little by little I began to reflect until one day, in a conversation with Dr. Hernán Silván in which he explained to me the effects and impacts of the marathon on the body, I decided that I did not want to run marathons. If I can, I will participate in a half marathon every year, as it is a very rewarding experience. -- I would like to run in my country, in the 10km of León . Some family and friends have participated and have spoken very highly of this test, which also has a beautiful route and ends next to the cathedral. I think that races should be organized every weekend in the cities, especially in the most beautiful ones. It is such an intense way to enjoy them… A city full of cars and buses is not the same. A city for running people is different, it is much more attractive. Popular races should be held permanently to encourage physical exercise. People have gotten hooked on running and runners tend to have an orderly lifestyle, with a more balanced head. Although I also have friends who are sick... (laughs) -- Running is combined in two different ways: one is running on the flat and the other is running on hills . They are two different sports.
